Having spent the better part of the past 30 years as a professional florist, and with Valentine’s day just around the corner , It’s time to share the care for those most romantic of flowers. As roses are bought at auction, and most men feel that only red roses express love, the price goes through the roof, because of supply and demand.
It takes 6 weeks to produce a rose in a greenhouse and that’s just about the time between Christmas and Valentine’s day. Unfortunately, because its winter in the Northern hemisphere, there is a shortage of natural sunlight, which produces the weakest rose of the year. Nevertheless, red roses remain the number one best seller on St. Valentines Day, so drop a little hint that roses from Columbia are your preference, and that you adore the lovely pastel shades. Then if you do get cut roses, you’ll have world class roses to enjoy during the February blahs. As soon as you recieve them, fill a clean vase three quarters full with tepid water, ( I soak my vases in polident to really get them clean; any residue left from the last flowers are full of bacteria, and will shorten the life of your roses substantially.) Add a half bottle of 7up or ginger ale to the water as the roses use the sugar in the pop as nutrients. If the vase is ceramic or colored, add the fresh flower food you recieved with the roses. I don’t use the flower food with clear vases as it makes the water murky. Cut each rose individually, just above a stem knuckle, about an inch from the bottom with a sharp knife or snips, on an angle, in order to expose the maximum number of capilleries to the fresh water. Do not remove the thorns, as it inhibits the capillary action, and shortens the life of the rose. Remove all leaves below the water line,( the leaf secretes a poison into the water), and insert the roses into the vase forming a triangle with the first three roses.
Repeat the process forming another triangle. You should have a grid established after placing nine roses individually in the fresh water. You can now insert the remaining 3 stems in the middle and they should stand up supported by the other stems. The thorns also help to support the middle flowers upright. Place your vase in a cool location, ( never in the direct sunlight: fresh flowers require no sunlight after being cut), and enjoy your beautiful bouquet. Every few days you should change the water, but if this is impractical, top up the vase with fresh water.
For optimum enjoyment of your roses, cut them another inch or two every few days, and change the water and they should last for a week or 10 days. Remember, the golden rule of roses is, "The closer the rose head is to the water, the longer the rose will last." As they open more, and get shorter and shorter, they will provide you with much pleasure. If you hang your roses upside down,in a cool, dark place, secured with an elastic just before their heads start to droop, you will have a pretty everlasting bouquet after about six weeks.
